What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture came from traditional Chinese medicine designed to treat pain and promote overall health. The treatment consists of inserting fine needles into the skin at strategic points on the body. These points activate and balance what is known as chi (chee), or life force energy, which flows through the body. It flows using pathways or meridians. The needles are inserted into specific points in these pathways to assist the re-balancing process and stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue.

Today, acupuncture practitioners can use lasers, electric pulses, and magnets in addition to needles.

What to expect from Acupuncture

Your practitioner will ask you for your history and to describe your pain or goal. They may also examine your facial tone or color and your tongue and get your pulse. These factors help them determine the type of treatment that will be most effective for you.

A session can take up to 60 minutes, though it can be shorter. Your acupuncturist will develop a treatment plan to help manage your pain, stress, or complaint. During the procedure, your practitioner will insert very thin needles for treatment. These may be far away from your pain area. The needles will stay in place for 10 to 15 minutes while you relax and lie still. Then they will remove the needles, and typically there is no discomfort.

Acupuncture has very few side effects.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine used to alleviate pain and promote overall health. Acupuncture uses needles placed along invisible meridians that run throughout the body. Today, acupuncturists also use lasers, magnets and electric pulses in addition to needles. Each meridian point has a specific meaning and can unblock and repair meridians and channels with vital energy or chi. Through the stimulation of the meridians, an acupuncturist is able to restore balance and ergo health to the patient.

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of health problems, such as:

  • Persistent lower back pain
  • Chronic tension-type headaches and migraines
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Postoperative pain
  • Allergies
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Insomnia

Acupuncture takes a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes, and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.
